What Little Italy Movers Run Into
Little Italy is a few busy blocks where restaurants, visitors and old tenements share very little space. Here is what our movers plan for before move day.
The Feast of San Gennaro
Every September the Feast of San Gennaro fills Mulberry Street and nearby blocks with stands and crowds for more than a week, and the street is closed to traffic. If your move falls in September, tell us your address early, and we will plan around the closure or suggest a date just before or after the feast.
Outdoor Dining on Mulberry Street
Restaurant seating takes over Mulberry Street, and parts of it are closed to cars at set times. We load from Grand Street, Hester Street or another open block when needed and bring dollies for the extra walk. North of Broome Street the restaurants thin out, and moving in Nolita is more about shoppers and boutique deliveries.
Tenement Walk-Ups
Most apartments here are in old five and six-story walk-ups with narrow stairwells and small landings. Measure big pieces before move day, so we know if anything has to come apart to make the turns. East of the Bowery, our Lower East Side crew carries furniture down the same kind of tenement stairs.
Inside the Congestion Relief Zone
All of Little Italy sits inside the zone that starts at 60th Street, so a moving truck pays a toll to enter it. Ask about it when you get your quote, so the total you see covers the whole day.
Little Italy Areas We Move
Little Italy is only a handful of blocks, but each street changes how the move runs.
Mulberry Street
The heart of the neighborhood, with walk-ups above restaurants and cafes. Outdoor dining and closures mean the truck often waits on a cross street, so plan for a longer carry.
Grand Street and Hester Street
Cross streets with walk-ups, shops and older buildings, and some of the best spots to load a truck when Mulberry Street is closed. Early starts keep the curb free. If you are trading a walk-up for an elevator loft, our NoHo movers can take you north of Houston Street.
Mott Street and Baxter Street
Tenements and small apartment buildings on the blocks toward Canal Street. Busy deliveries and narrow sidewalks call for a careful plan and a quick load. Below Canal Street, our movers in Chinatown plan around the same crowded sidewalks and delivery traffic.
